'ASEAN to Boost Ties with Seoul'

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is expected to upgrade its ties with South Korea to a strategic partnership.

According to a document obtained by AFP (Agence France-Presse), the ten members of ASEAN and South Korea will reach such an agreement in their annual summit talks next Friday.

The document says the two sides will strengthen cooperation in politics, security, economy, society and culture.

ASEAN and South Korea first established a dialogue channel in 1989. A bilateral free trade agreement between the two took effect this past January.
