'Int’l Treaty Needed to Stop Arms Trafficking'

An international confederation of organizations aiming to end injustice and poverty is suggesting that a global arms trade treaty be instituted to prevent the proliferation of weapons.

Oxfam noted in a report published recently that a transport ship owned by a New Zealand trading company was detained in Bangkok, Thailand, while carrying 35-tons of North Korean-made weapons in 2009.

Oxfam said that because eight companies in ten nations were implicated in the incident, a binding international treaty is necessary to stop such illegal trading or arms.

The report noted the New Zealand government has said that it would revise laws and regulations on companies registered in New Zealand to prevent similar incidents of arms trafficking.
