Kyodo: China Proposed Regularization of Nuke Talks

Japan’s Kyodo News says China has proposed that once the six-way nuclear talks resume, the multilateral discussions should be held once a month.

The Japanese broadcaster quoted a source as saying Monday that China’s top nuclear negotiator Wu Dawei made the proposal during a visit to Japan at the end of August and again while in the United States in early September.

According to the source, Tokyo and Washington rejected the proposal, saying it was too early to discuss such plans when conditions have not yet been met for the resumption of the talks.
Tokyo and Washington reportedly mentioned as one such condition North Korea’s refusal to admit its involvement in the sinking of the “Cheonan” naval ship.

The report said Wu also made the same proposal when he visited Seoul at the end of August. The report said it was not clear how Seoul responded to the proposal.
