U.S. special envoy for human rights in North Korea Robert King is urging Pyongyang to allow U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in North Korea Marzuki Darusman to visit the communist state.

King, who met with Darusman in New York last week, said he hopes the North Korean government cooperates with the international community on improving human rights conditions by allowing Darusman to visit the North.

King said the North Korean people are greatly limited in their access to daily necessities due to the North’s currency reform measures and its supervision of markets. King asked Darusman to consider ways to improve the situation.

Darusman became the new rapporteur earlier this year, replacing Vitit Muntarbhorn from Thailand, who was not able to visit the North during the six years he held the position.
