White House: NK, FTA to be Focus of Obama, Lee Talks

The White House says issues related to North Korea and the long-stalled six-party denuclearization talks will be the main focus of discussions when U.S. President Barack Obama meets with President Lee Myung-bak next month in Seoul.

Jeff Bader, senior director for Asian affairs at the National Security Council, made the comment to reporters Thursday as he discussed Obama’s upcoming trip to Asia that will bring him to South Korea, India, Indonesia and Japan.

Bader added that Obama will meet with Lee on November eleventh after visiting U.S. troops at Yongsan Garrison.

Bader said the pending South Korea-U.S. free trade agreement (FTA) will also be a major subject addressed during Obama’s trip.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was in Hawaii on Thursday, reiterated that pending issues regarding the trade deal should be settled before the G20 summit next month.
