Global Pork Prices Surge amid FMD Outbreak in S.Korea

Global futures prices for pork have surged amid the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in South Korea.

Pork futures for April ended trading at over 90 dollars per pound on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange on Thursday. The price is the highest in 14 years and is 30 percent higher than a year ago.

Experts say that pork exports to Asia have soared due to the FMD outbreak in South Korea and that prices have spiked as a result.

South Korea decided earlier to lift tariffs on pork imports until June to ensure stable supply amid the FMD outbreak.
