Russia Not Opposed to UNSC Discussion of NK’s UEP

Russia’s chief nuclear envoy said Friday that Moscow would not oppose the referring of North Korea's uranium enrichment program (UEP) to the U.N. Security Council (UNSC).

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin made the remark after talks with his South Korean counterpart Wi Sung-lac in Seoul on Friday.

Borodavkin also said that Moscow and Seoul agree that North Korea’s uranium program is a violation of Security Council resolutions. He emphasized that Russia will cooperate with the international community to address the issue.

However, when asked if that implies progress in Seoul’s push to refer the issue to the UNSC, a South Korean official said that although Moscow would not oppose such a move, Russia is also open to addressing the issue within the framework of the six-party talks.
