The United States and Japan have agreed to specify plans to boost security cooperation with South Korea and Australia when they devise new joint strategic goals.

Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper said Saturday that U.S. and Japanese foreign and defense ministers will adopt plans to strengthen security cooperation with various countries, including South Korea and Australia, when they meet this spring for talks on setting new joint strategic goals.

The daily said the two countries will focus discussions on promoting cooperation in the safe use of space and in jointly countering cyber attacks.

The U.S. and Japan drew up joint strategic goals regarding their alliance in 2005 and have not sought revisions since then. But last month, during bilateral working-level talks between foreign affairs and defense officials, the two nations decided to revise their goals this year.

The two countries’ new joint strategic goals are expected to be unveiled when U.S. President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan meet for summit talks in Washington around June.
