Russia Supports S. Korea's Calls for UNSC to Address NK's UEP

Russia has expressed support for South Korea's efforts to persuade the U.N. Security Council to discuss North Korea's uranium enrichment program.

In a statement issued on Friday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that the North’s reported uranium enrichment capacities require a more thorough international inspection as they would violate existing Security Council resolutions.

The statement said Russia respects the opinions of other permanent members of the Security Council on the matter. The statement also expressed hope that the stalled six-way nuclear talks will resume soon.

South Korea and the United States are seeking to have the Security Council address the North’s uranium enrichment program. As part of their efforts, the two nations have informed the council’s permanent members, including Russia and China, of the severity of the North’s program.
