EU Parliament Committee to Vote on South Korea-EU FTA

The European Parliament’s International Trade Committee (INTA) will vote on the European Union’s free trade deal with South Korea on Monday.

The trade pact is expected to pass quite easily as the committee has already voted overwhelmingly in favor of the prerequisite for the South Korea-EU free trade agreement, the bilateral safeguard act, on January 26.

There is one possible hurdle, however. The South Korean Ministry of Environment has fixed and announced more stringent standards for greenhouse gas emissions and automobile mileage. The INTA will likely hear the position of the European Commission on the stricter standards and debate over the issue

If the European Parliament passes the FTA and other regulations implementing the bilateral safeguard act at its plenary on February 17th, then the EU completes all preparations for the South Korea-EU FTA to take effect by July first.
