S.Korea Mulling MOUs with Neighbors of Somalia

The government is mulling on creating memorandums of understanding (MOUs) on handling Somali pirates with nations near Somalia.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade official said the measure is being prepared since it is difficult to deport live captured pirates to South Korea each time a South Korean ship is hijacked.

The MOU under review will include actions to be taken on pirates who were captured alive. It will involve taking the Somali pirates to nearby nations, where they will be interrogated, tried and punished.

The South Korean government says, however, the details of each MOU could differ as each nation that Seoul pursues such a pact may have varying conditions.
