South Korean firms in Libya are seeing continuous damage amid growing antigovernment protests in the North African country.
The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said Wednesday that at around 9 a.m. Tuesday, local time, a group of protesters raided a construction site of Daewoo Engineering and Construction Company in Zwitina, located about 130 kilometers south of Benghazi city. The protesters also took five vehicles from the site.
At around that same time, a group of some 30 Libyans raided a construction site of Isu Engineering and Construction Company and took construction equipment and six cars.
A construction company affiliated with Korea Express also saw its construction site in Libya raided by armed locals.
The land ministry said hundreds of South Korean workers in Libya have taken shelter at buildings near the construction sites. The Koreans are facing difficulties in returning to South Korea due to delays in the issuance of exit visas and as most outbound flights from Tripoli have been canceled.
The ministry is mulling measures to transport the South Korean workers to a third country or to have the Koreans take shelter in a nearby country via an overland route.
