South Korean chief nuclear envoy Wi Sung-lac says North Korea's uranium enrichment issue must be discussed before the six-party nuclear talks can resume.
Wi, who is visiting the U.S., spoke with reporters there after holding talks with a number of senior U.S. officials, including the State Department's special adviser for nonproliferation and arms control Robert Einhorn, U.S. special representative for North Korea policy Stephen Bosworth and U.S. special envoy for the six-party talks Sung Kim.
Speaking with reporters about the U.N. Security Council's failure to adopt a report on the North's uranium enrichment program, Wi said that he is working on ways to deal with a variety of scenarios. He said Seoul and Washington have agreed to closely cooperate to produce positive results at the U.N.
On the six-way talks' resumption, Wi said that for now, it can't be said that conditions have been fostered to resume the talks. He said that steps necessary to foster such conditions, including inter-Korean dialogue and North Korea fulfilling its obligations, are being examined.
