South Korea says some 30 South Korean nationals have fled Libya and are headed to Turkey.

The freighter carrying the South Koreans departed from Benghazi in Libya is expected to arrive in Turkey’s southern port of Port Marmara at around 3 p.m. local time Monday.

A South Korean Defense Ministry official said South Korean military attache based in Turkey requested help from the Turkish armed forces to make the trip possible, adding that the government is using all means possible to guarantee the safety of its citizens.

Meanwhile the South Korean Navy destroyer Choi Young has been directed from Oman to Libya to assist in evacuations. It is expected to enter Libyan waters on Wednesday.
