White House, Republican Leaders Begin Talks on FTAs

The White House and the U.S. House Republican leadership have begun negotiations on the path forward for the three pending free trade agreements including one with South Korea.

The magazine Inside U.S. Trade says that deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs Michael Froman last week met for the first time with aides of House Majority Leader John Beoner over the implementation plan of the three FTAs.

The White House is known to be urging that the Korea FTA be approved first but Beoner and the Republican leadership wants to ratify all three deals at the same time.

The article cited observers as saying that it'll likely take several meetings for the two sides to reach an agreement that allows the trade agenda to advance.

Congressman Dave Reichert who continues to fight for the Korea FTA expects the bill to be put to a vote for approval before July.
