S.Korea to Conduct Probe into Shanghai Scandal

South Korea plans to send an interagency probe team to Shanghai for an on-site investigation into a scandal involving South Korean diplomats and a leakage of confidential information to a Chinese woman.

The government will, through this round of investigations, confirm whether the former diplomats at the South Korean consulate in Shanghai engaged in inappropriate conduct with the Chinese woman identified as Deng Xinmin.

In addition, the team will probe the consulate officials and check CCTV footage to gain an accurate picture of the situation, as the testimonies of the officials differ in regards to the channels through which information was leaked. The information included the contact information of South Korean government officials.

The team will also investigate if other confidential information was leaked and if Deng influenced the consulate in the designation of visa issuance agencies.

The probe team will also confirm suspicions that the consulate reportedly ignored information given to the consulate about Deng’s activities by South Korean nationals in Shanghai. In addition, the probe will attempt to determine whether there were any other consulate employees involved in the scandal.
