RFA: WFP May Cut Food Aid to N.Korea

Radio Free Asia (RFA) is reporting that the World Food Program (WFP) could stop providing food aid to North Korea from April due to lack of financing and a surge in international grain prices.

The U.S. broadcaster cited the WFP’s spokeswoman for North Korea Nana Skau as saying that the food supplies secured last year for aid for the North will be depleted soon and that future food aid plans cannot be devised.

She was cited as saying that unless the international community provides funding, the WFP will be forced to reduce the amount of food it provides to North Korea.

The WFP had planned to provide food aid to some two-point-five million women and children in North Korea from July 2010 to the first half of 2012. However, sluggish fundraising has forced the agency to cut its aid to one-third of its original target.
