NHK: 1600 Dead or Missing from Quake

Japanese broadcaster NHK says the earthquake that struck Japan on Friday and the tsunami that followed has left 16-hundred people dead or missing.

The Japanese Police Agency said at 10 a.m. on Saturday that a total of 287 died and 725 are missing from nine regions in northeastern Japan.

In addition to the official figures, some 200 to 300 bodies have been found in coastal areas of the city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture.

Japan’s Defense Ministry announced that some 18-hundred households had been destroyed in the city of Minamisoma in Fukushima Prefecture. However, the exact extent of the damage has yet to be confirmed.

In addition, large fires broke out in many parts of Kesennuma City in Miyagi Prefecture, which will likely add to the numbers of dead or missing.
