Japan experienced a wave of continuous aftershocks following last Friday’s powerful earthquake.

As many as 100 aftershocks with magnitudes exceeding 4.6 were reported through Sunday. Five of the quakes exceeded magnitude 6.0.

The tremors inflicted major damage on buildings and structures.

The U.S. Geological Survey has warned that the aftershocks could continue for months or even years.

It's also forecast in Japan that a quake stronger than magnitude 7.0 could likely follow.
