The number of people killed by last Friday’s 9.0-magnitude earthquake in Japan continues to rise after the quake struck the northeastern part of the island nation.
According to Japan’s Kyodo news agency, over five-thousand people are confirmed to be dead or missing as of Monday evening.
Many international media outlets are reporting that the disaster will have a death toll that will top 10,000.
Meanwhile… a South Korean national has been confirmed dead following last Friday’s 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the resulting tsunami.
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry confirmed Monday that the body of a 40-year-old South Korean national identified by his surname Lee has been found at a construction site at a power plant in Ibaraki Prefecture.
It is the first South Korean death to be confirmed following the disaster.
The ministry added that the body of a 43-year-old Japanese person of Korean descent has also been found at the same site where Lee’s body was found.
Currently, an estimated 910-thousand South Koreans are in Japan.
Ten-thousand of them live in the Sendai region, which was the hardest hit by Friday’s quake.
