Japan says it will host a trilateral meeting of foreign ministers this weekend as planned despite being hit by the most devastating earthquake in its history.

A Foreign Ministry official said Monday that the Japanese government informed Seoul that it will open the trilateral meeting in Kyoto on Saturday as planned. The meeting will be attended by the foreign ministers of South Korea, Japan and China.

Discussions are being held to reduce the length of the talks to one day instead of two days in consideration of Japan’s situation.

The ministers from the three countries are expected to discuss ways to assist Japan in recuperating from the disaster.

The upcoming meeting would be the fifth of its kind to be held. The last meeting was held on Jeju Island in June 2007.
