Around 2,000 Bodies Found in Miyagi Prefecture

Around two-thousand bodies were found on Monday in two parts of Miyagi Prefecture that were hit by last Friday’s 9.0-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami.

Local authorities said that some one-thousand bodies were found along the coasts of the Oshika District in Miyagi Prefecture and around one-thousand more in the town of Minami Sanriku Cho on Monday.

The town, located in the northeastern part of Miyagi Prefecture, has a population of some 17-thousand-300. Among the residents there, some 75-hundred have been evacuated while the rest remain unaccounted for.

According to local police, the death toll from the quake in the northeastern regions stood at one-thousand-597 while the number of missing people stood at one-thousand-481 as of Monday morning.
