S.Korean Emergency Rescue Team Arrives Near Sendai

A South Korean rescue team supporting rescue and recovery operations in the aftermath of Japan’s devastating earthquake has arrived near Sendai, one of the hardest-hit regions.

A Foreign Ministry official said the 102-member rescue team will immediately begin operations after discussions with the authorities in Sendai. A five-member advance team, which has already begun rescue work, will join them soon.

The ministry also said that it has completed preparations to dispatch an additional team of some 100 paramedics. It added that it could provide relief supplies and forensic specialists.

The spokesman added that contact will be made to the family of the first confirmed South Korean death from the earthquake, a 40-year-old man identified as Lee. He said the government will provide full support for funeral arrangements.
