A disaster relief medical team organized to address large-scale disasters, including radiation exposure, has begun preparations for relief activities in Japan.
Seoul National University Hospital said Monday that it has organized a team that can provide medical services at the site of the nuclear power plant explosions. It is currently discussing its dispatch with the South Korean government and Japanese medical teams.
Dispatch of overseas disaster relief teams requires discussions between the South Korean Foreign Ministry and nations that need such support. It then needs the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s request for personnel.
The 21-member disaster relief team comprises of doctors specializing in internal medicine, orthopedics, pediatrics, dermatology, and emergency medicine, in addition to nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, and other support staff. The members are trained to operate in dangerous situations, including exposure to radiation.
