Joint Statement to Pledge Cooperation in Nuclear Emergencies

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK says South Korea, China and Japan will announce a joint statement on nuclear safety following their trilateral summit to be held in Tokyo this weekend.

NHK reported on Thursday that the statement will pledge close cooperation among the three nations in the event of nuclear emergencies in view of their geographical proximity and friendly ties.

The South Korean and Chinese leaders will also express their support for Japan's efforts to overcome the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

NHK said that the three nations will push for consultations of nuclear experts from the three nations to bolster the safety of nuclear power plants in preparation for natural disasters. They will also establish a framework for early notification of emergencies.
