Bong Joon-ho Receives Top Director's Cut Award for "Okja"

Bong Joon-ho has been named director of the year by his fellow South Korean directors for his action adventure film “Okja.”

The Directors Guild of Korea(DGK) handed its top award to Bong on Thursday during the annual Director’s Cut Awards in Seoul.

It marks the fourth time for the 48-year-old filmmaker to receive the award, but the first time Bong has won a major local award for “Okja.”

The film sparked controversy due to the way it was distributed. Many South Korean multiplexes boycotted the film as its main producer, Netflix, decided to release it simultaneously in theaters and on its own streaming service.
