The nation's highways are seeing heavy traffic congestion on Sunday as more South Koreans are heading home for the Chuseok holidays.

Some sections on the southbound lanes of the Gyeongbu Expressway, the West Coast Highway and the Yeongdong Expressway were congested as of 1 p.m. as vehicles are increasingly leaving the capital city. But the northbound lanes are having no significant traffic delays.

The Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) forecasts about three-point-85 million cars will hit the roads nationwide on Sunday.

A passenger car leaving the Seoul toll gate at 1 p.m. Sunday is expected to reach the southern port city of Busan five hours later. Travel time from Seoul to other cities such as Daegu and Mokpo are four hours and ten minutes each, and from Seoul to Daejeon is two hours and 20 minutes.

Traffic on the southbound lanes is expected to peak in the afternoon and let up at around 7 p.m.
