The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that U.S. President-elect Joe Biden plans to name former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell to the newly created position of "Asia tsar."
The new position would coordinate Asia policy among the many U.S. government departments and agencies.
The Financial Times suggested the creation of the new post and the naming of Campbell, a veteran diplomat, to run it reflects the importance the incoming Biden administration places on relations with Asia, including with that of China.
Campbell is widely regarded as an expert on Asia policy and was deeply involved in the Obama administration's so-called "pivot to Asia" as the State Department's top diplomat for the region.
He is also considered a China hawk, having recently written that Washington should resolve its issues with Beijing by uniting with allies to push U.S. strategy in the Asia-Pacific region.
Regarding Korea, Campbell said at a seminar last month that the incoming Biden administration must send a message to Pyongyang after deciding U.S. policy toward North Korea at the start of the presidential term.
