International Olympic Committee(IOC) chief Thomas Bach said on Thursday that the virus-delayed Tokyo Olympics will be held this summer and there is "no plan B."

Bach said in an online interview with Japan's Kyodo News that at this moment, there is no reason whatsoever to believe that the Olympic Games in Tokyo will not open on July 23.

He added this is why there is no plan B and the IOC was fully committed to making the games safe and successful.

Bach told Kyodo News that the IOC may need to be "flexible" and make "sacrifices," hinting at the possibility of reducing the capacity of the games. The IOC chief stressed that the priority is safety and there is no taboo in the discussion to ensure it.

He also said the Beijing Winter Olympics would go ahead as planned in 2022.

The Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were pushed back by a year last March, four months before they were set to open.
