Prosecutors repeated to an appeals court on Friday their demand for a 30-year prison sentence for former President Park Geun-hye for her role in a massive corruption scandal that led to her removal from office.
The prosecution’s request to the Seoul High Court has not changed from the previous recommendation it made to the Seoul Central District Court before her sentencing in April.
The lower court sentenced the impeached president to 24 years in jail on April sixth and slapped her with a fine of 18 billion won. The prosecution also maintained its request to the Seoul High Court to hand Park a fine of 118-point-five billion won.
Prosecutors said that Park abused the power bestowed on her by the people in securing private benefits for herself and her longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil. They also said the impeached president had demonstrated the practice of collusion by tackling issues with conglomerate chiefs behind closed doors.
Park faces a total of 18 charges, including bribery, abuse of power, coercion and leaking state secrets.
Later in the day, another sentencing hearing will be held for Park on charges related to pocketing special funds from the state spy agency and meddling in then-ruling Saenuri Party's nominations.
